Artist Note:
This painting started on the ground, in the Pike National Forest, Colorado. I placed the canvas on the ground and worked pastel into the surface, then left it outside for months, through different weather and natural conditions. This piece, among others, was buried and unearthed. When I brought this canvas back into the studio, I applied thin layers of watered-down paint, working to preserve what the canvas had already become — and then, unlike some of the other canvases that began in the same way, I kept going, using a heavier-bodied paint to explore form as part of the shapes that were already there. Leaves, portals, containers, memories of bones found in the woods. What started in the abstract became something more reflective and literal. The Density became something new in the making.
